It's cool, but if you're not a home theater junkie this might be more money than you need to spend if you're not using it. Is it worth upgrading all your gear to take full advantage of Atmos? No. If you buy a movie that features Atmos it will also have an audio track your current gear can play, minus the height channels. Just keep in mind there won't be compatibility issues. It might be available with Atmos on the 4K Blu-ray, but not on Amazon, for example. It's even in a handful of video games.Ĭhances are if the movie is 4K, it's also Atmos - though that doesn't mean it's in Atmos everywhere you can find that movie. On disc it can be found on 4K and regular Blu-ray discs. As we noted above, music can be found on Amazon Music Unlimited, Tidal and Apple Music. If you're streaming you can find it on Amazon Prime Video, Netflix and Vudu. In addition to the gear, you'll also need Atmos content. But if you've got a bunch of spare speakers and amps laying around and a room that can fit them, go for it. So how many could you have if you really wanted to go wild? Oh, 24… plus 10 height speakers. At the bottom, you see a soundbar designed to do the same.Ītmos also lets you have a greater number of possible speakers. These are tuned so the bounced audio sounds correct to your ears. Each is a traditional speaker but also has separate drivers that shoot sound to bounce off the ceiling. At the top, you see a setup with specially designed upward-firing speakers. To the right, you'll see a couple of Atmos home setup examples. (Those sources include 4K Blu-ray players, newerĪnd some game consoles.) And you'll need Atmos content, of course, which we'll discuss in a moment. Dolby Atmos can be replayed on a traditional surround system or even with a pair of headphones thanks to technologies like Dolby Virtual:X and Dolby Headphones as well as in conjunction with Apple's own head-tracking technologies.īut if you want height channels, more channels or other benefits of Atmos, then you'll need a receiver or soundbar that can decode it and a source that provides it. While the biggest change in the cinema was the addition of height channels, Atmos soundtracks can work with many different systems, no height speakers required. While this format, also known as "immersive," was originally designed for movie theaters, it can now be used as a new way to remix and listen to music from the likes of The Beatles and Ariana Grande. It's also a competitor to DTS:X, and it's found in everything from the biggest commercial cinemas to home theater systems - and now it's on mobile phones and tablets too. It's a standard that can convincingly simulate a 3D audio space with a set of AirPods, but you may not know it's based on a technology that's been with us for many years: Dolby Atmos.ĭolby Atmos is a popular surround-sound format. When it's not screwed up.You may have heard the term "spatial audio" bandied about by Apple, especially when talking about its headphones and hardware. AND the fact that they've chopped the price of the app indicates IMHO and experience that their head developer walked out and the apps gonna die. I seriously doubt they have anyone doing testing over there at this point. But when I get time, I keep bugging the bot with new bug report information, whether it wants it or not. I've been attempting to get their tech support to pay attention, but all I get are responses worthy of a BOT, named 'Amurtha'. But you'll find that Boom 3D isn't actually working at that point. (4) You then get nonsense that you have to reboot your system. (3) Watch it ask to install its helper, again. The workaround is stupid but it works: (1) QUIT Boom 3D app. Once it happens, it's persistent through system reboots. Either the Boom Audio sound output disappears OR it says it's 'Unknown'. *sigh* the apparent memory leak problem is causing havoc with the Sound System Preferences.
